RRP $80 | 93pts Vinous | 93pts Wine Review Online | 92pts World of Fine Wine | 92pts Allen Meadows, Burghound | 91pts Robert Parker
Winemaking at Château du Moulin-à-Vent dates back to 1732 when it was known as Château des Thorins. In 2009, Jean-Jacques purchased the property, replanted 70,000 vines and made the move to sustainable viticulture and now, according to Wine Advocate, these wines “will be flatteringly compared with the great Pinots of the Cote d’Or.” High praise indeed.
This gamay is gorgeous, says Michael Apstein, thanks to a “balanced mixture of dark fruit and grite-like minerality. An alluring hint of bitterness in the finish reminds you this is a serious wine.” Notes of coffee, black pepper and cocoa attack the nostrils, while flavours of oak, cocoa and vanilla mix with sour cherries and spice. It has picked up 93 points from Vinous and Wine Review Online, as well as 92 points from World of Fine Wine and Allen Meadows (from Burghound), and at 50% off is a great opportunity to get around a quality gamay.
RRP $60 | 91pts Burghound | 90pts Vinous | 17/20 Jancis Robinson | 17-18/20 Le Revue Do Vin De France
Oh Beaujolais – be still my beating heart. What can we say about you that hasn’t been said already? With cherries and strawberries on the nose, it’s soft and fruity and has plenty of years left in it, though you wouldn’t be wrong if you got into it right now.
With 91 points from Burghound and and a 17/20 from Vino Empress aka Jancis Robinson, oak takes a backseat to the red fruits but is ever-present like a helicopter mum – just less acidic. Fresh and still evolving, it comes from a producer who replanted 70,000 vines and committed to sustainable winemaking back in 2009, and judging by the result that was a grand ol’ idea indeed.
RRP $50, 4 1/2 Stars Wine Advocate
“Beaujolais produces gamay, which isn’t massively known or grown in Australia, but it’s similar to pinot noir and has really nice violet on the nose, with a bit of spice as well. On the palate it has these beautiful tannins – full stop tannins, as they’re known. So it’d be quite similar to maybe a cool climate pinot noir, and if you like Kiwi pinot then I’d say give this is a go. Beaujolais from this cru specifically is known to age for ten years and come out the other side being rather pinot-esque, but it’s also drinkable. It’s good quality wine and it has been made the same way for years and years, so they must be doing something right.” – Zahn, Mofo Wine Broker
