5 Stars Sam Kim

This crazy cat is at the very cutting edge of Rioja’s new wave of wonderful wines! Far from the dusty leather armchair wines most associated with the region, this is young, racy and basically decked out in go-faster stripes. It’s for a young-at-heart crowd, bright, juicy and exuberant. It’s the kind of wine that screams fun and is gonna rub off on all your guests. It tastes like a vino well above the price bracket, though deftly avoids stuffiness of any kind. Raucously red fruited, with a generous dollop of French and American oak, it’s prepped to party as soon as that cork is popped. And imagine casually serving funky new-wave Rioja, just as your house red. How f*@!ing cool are you?!

When a producer as prolific as Roquebrun (Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2015 International Wine Challenge) does ‘entry level’, you know it won’t be run-of-the-mill. So they’ve selected some merlot, cabernet, carignan and grenache, given it a tickle of carbonic maceration (Beaujolais-style), and you end up with a wine that expresses all the blueberry and melted chocolate of the Languedoc, along with the strawberry-and-spice slipperiness of the winemaking techniques. It’s harmonious but still powerful - loads of aromatics and spice, and loads to like. Three gold medals (so far) don’t say otherwise.

Some wines just scream fun times from the moment you meet. This is one of those. Made from an exotic blend of native Portuguese grapes we can neither spell nor pronounce, it’s like that roommate you had at uni that somehow managed to coax you out of your bed every single time. It’s super juicy, full of vibrantly ripe berries and an easy-going medium body for maximum smashability. It’s uncomplicated and unpretentious, just delicious flavour and obvious quality. It’s equally at home on the dinner table with family as being sipped from a mug while making enemies over Monopoly at a friend’s place. We defy you to not enjoy the experience.

This is a wine that doesn’t muck around, but is eminently likeable. If someone says they don’t like it, they’re just jealous you got the last glass. Loads of earthy red fruits, damson plum and musk on the nose, that meet orange oil and graphite. Starts mineral; ends mineral - the palate is wonderful. Not as dense as you may expect thanks to acid and aromatic lift throughout, plus tannins that don’t hammer you like many a monastrell (aka mataro), thanks to the garnacha (actually garnacha tintoera, or alicante bouschet) element. Still certainly full-bodied, but seriously approachable.
