Why do we love this case?

Pinot Palooza is the world’s wildest pinot noir party! This case is a roundup of what we had open in Auckland at the unmissable Vinomofo stand this year. Check out what was tasted and see if you want more of the same to enjoy at home, this is the perfect way to do it.

From the crystal clarity of the Yarra to the serious hearty heft of Central Otago, and everything in between, there’s the whole spectrum of colours and flavours to discover in one case! Drink now and enjoy the exuberance of youth, or lay them down to contemplate dark complexity in the future, the choice is yours.

The Don and Duck Sauce are two of our amazing collaboration wines, born of working with some of our very favourite makers, Oakridge and De Bortoli. We’re rightly proud of these two!

Hefty stuff, living up to its name. The same fruit goes into Escarpment’s Pahi Pinot Noir. This reminds me of the first whiff you get of the Christmas pudding on fire; that heady, toffeed cherry, fig, orange rind and raisin; that expectation of impending delight. Gary Walsh said it was one of his highlights of a recent trip to Martinborough, too: “slightly earthy and gamey, in a good way, cocoa dipped plums, floral too. Full bodied, layered with tannin, dried herb perfume, and more of that rich tannin pushing it out. Heaps of power, and a feel of ‘minerality’ throughout. Woah. Great expression of Martinborough Pinot Noir here.” Can’t ask for much more, can we?

There’s something about Otago pinot. There’s a tectonic power there. A incredible, elemental intensity and timeless energy that drives these wines like no other. Other pinot is ‘pretty’. This is wild. Dark, seductive and moving, it’s wine that poses questions on a cosmic scale. It appeals to cerebral analysis and base instinct in equal measure, as much an experience as a drink. Don’t take it lightly, mofos.

This is a smidge left of centre, to be found in that sweet spot where well-established convention and delight in zany exploration meet. Pinot noir it most definitely is, but the colour in the glass reveals its spirit. Cloudy like a berry smoothie, this is fun and juicy as one, too. Pushing the boundaries of unfined/unfiltered wine gives crunchy texture and mouthfilling smashability. The Court of Master Sommeliers may not turn their backs on Burgundy any time soon, but this’ll be a much better friend to you with a picnic in the park. Think raspberry liqueur, cherry jam, and a savoury prosciutto notes, begging to be slurped out of a tin mug on a sunny day.

This is brilliantly rendered, beautiful pinot. Fragrance, depth, perfect poise and ripeness. The oak is almost non-existent, just a support structure for the pristine fruit flavours, of which there are many. Raspberry coulis, blackberry juice, crunchy red apple, soft florals and spice, rich earthiness. Silken texture and wonderful acid drive. The 2015 was a lovely wine itself, but the 2016 is a big step up.

This pinot represents wonderful harmony of Wairarapa terroir and top-notch winemaking. It’s a wine of gorgeous balance, elegant and fragrant in the glass, exuding delicate floral notes and bright forest fruits. It sits squarely in the middle of the spectrum, with plenty of ethereal magic to charm you, but not lacking in flavour or presence either. Bright acidity keeps things clean and clear, and will ensure spectacular ageing potential for many years.

2018 was a long, dry growing season and gifted this lovely Yarra drop with spades of lifted perfume and texture. Those bright cranberries and redcurrants are front and centre in its youth, and it’s a lovely option to chuck in the fridge for some cool and fruity freshness. But if you manage to avoid guzzling all of it down in the first month, it’ll reward cellaring with delightful forest floor and spicy notes. The fine acid backbone was made for rich, fatty dishes. No prizes for guessing our dream food pairing with this one!
