Welcome to... SOUTH AMEEERICA! Does anyone else just hear that skit from Sesame Street when they hear South America? Nope, just me. More than just a one trick malbec-making pony, South America has altitude and a new world attitude on its side.

Here’s a little more about each of these six steak-loving reds, to get you as excited as we are about the next inbound container:

“Young, wild and free” is the tagline on the back of the bottle: “the result of our eternal quest to produce extremely pure wines. Anarkia, a wine with no added sulphites and fermented with native yeast.” Sure enough, there’s a little “kssht!” as I open the screwcap. But wow, the wine’s as opaque as they come. Deep, almost black-red. The nose is tightly coiled, a fist of tobacco-laced, earthen black fruits. Mulberry, blackberry, stewed rhubarb, biscuit crumb, a freshly baked smell. It’s youthful, full of life and fruit. Just full, in fact. Full-bodied, full-flavoured, full of delicious freshness and raspy tannin. Long and very moreish, ending up in all that fruit, and perfect balance. It’s like a big bloke dancing pirouettes across your palate - occasionally touches down with a big impression, but leaves you gasping with wonder. Good stuff.

What’s a Port grape doing in a wine like this? I’ll tell you what. It’s giving malbec an added lift (as if it needed it) so the aromatics to stratospheric. Touriga is a lifted variety anyway, and it’s role as a blending variety is generally to boost aroma, add a bit of spice and pepper, as well as some round, chunky tannins. Given Mendoza malbec’s propensity for full mid-palate purple fruit smoothness, these two dance very well together. As evidenced by Decanter’s big rap on this. 45 years of vine age on the malbec and careful hand-selection have helped propel this wine to these heights (the actual vineyard altitude helps too, obviously). This wine’s high in so many ways. Elevate your wine drinking, and reset your new normal. You can thank us later.

Uber bright red cherry and coconutty oak, with dried blueberry and smokey overtones. Deserves a decant. Distinctively smooth-but-grainy palate with driving acidity that stretches out the fruit to a fine taper. It’s rich and ripe tannin will require some appropriate meats on the table. No complaints here!

More dark, seductive funk than you’d get in your average Mendoza cabernet - lots of boiled red fruits, fresh black fruits still, a little fruit leather too, but some Dutch licorice and seaweed-like characters that I find pretty damn enticing. The palate could have gone either way, but happily it came to the Light Side of the Force, with much more straightforward fruit (still juicy fresh, mind you), and drying tannins that coat the mouth without taking over the show. Oak, if there, is a background element, thankfully, allowing the full force of the fruit to follow through. Yum.

Perky plum and other purple fruits right here. A freshly proven sourdough quality to it that’s quite alluring, with a blueberry juice moat around it. The palate is super smooth and fruit-driven, with stewed plum, strawberry and black pepper following through with more allure. Long, sumptuous, just a little bit of tannin to give the wine weight and presence. ‘Perky’ is the perfect word for this bright little medium-bodied red.

Almost as bright and perky as its malbec sibling - loads of plum and purple fruit, overlaid with tobacco, spice and a waxy jasmine quality. The palate is glossy, full of red fruit and silky tannin. Reminiscent of Jammy Dodgers dipped in molten dark chocolate. This would be very easy to drink a lot of, particularly with some red meat.
